AIMS: Building on the success of our past meetings, the aim of this 2024 conference is to support and expand scientific and educational collaboration and cooperation between US and Israeli scientists doing research on understanding, diagnosing, and curing Alzheimer’s disease. As a subsidiary aim, we seek to facilitate Israeli graduate students finding postdoctoral fellowship positions at US universities; to that end we will have a scientific poster session for Israeli (and some US) students to present their work. Our longer-term goals are to: (1) Expand opportunities for US-Israeli collaboration on research, papers, and grants that advance research on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, including future joint US-Israel proposals to the NIH and other agencies, and (2) Establish short-term summer brain research internships for students from US universities to work in Israeli brain research labs.
SCOPE: We will include molecular, cellular, systems, behavioral and cognitive neuroscience approaches to understanding, preventing, and treating Alzheimer’s disease, with about half the talks being laboratory-based and/or animal studies and the other half being human clinical studies.
FORMAT: The format will be a one-day workshop, hosted by both Tel Aviv University and Hebrew University of Jerusalem. We expect about half a dozen leading US scientists to attend and speak as well as a similar number of Israeli scientists. We expect a large turnout from Israeli scientists, clinicians and students (with the latter participating in our poster session/job fair). We have strong indications of interest from a number of prominent US and Israeli scientists to speak; the full speaker list should be finalized by March.
DATE: Sunday, September 22, 2024 (with optional unstructured outings and events on Monday, September 23rd).
ORGANIZING COMMITTEE: Mark Gluck & Michal Beeri (Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA), Hermona Soreq (Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel), Illana Gozes (Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel). See contact information below.
FUNDRAISING GOALS: $50,000 to cover airfare and hotel for US speakers and other participants, publicity, logistical support, and local event hosting costs. Donations can be made online at: https://brainhealth.rutgers.edu/donate/. (
Include an email and/or note that it is to support the US-Israel programs).
